Investors entered 2020 in high spirits, buoyed by steady economic growth,accommodative monetary policy and the Phase One trade deal between the US and China which had seemed to remove the risk of an all-out trade war.

However, having appeared resilient in the face of emerging concerns about the Covid-19 outbreak in January 2020, equity markets have fallen sharply over the past few weeks as the virus has spread rapidly across the globe.

The global spread of the outbreak has led the World Health Organisation (WHO) to declare Covid-19 a pandemic.
